Dog lovers love their furry little friends. In fact, it’s amazing how much dog owners will put up with that they would never dream of putting up with if a family member or friend did the same types of things. Imagine a family member screaming their head off every time someone walked on the sidewalk in front of your home? You’d be quick to have a stern talk with them but all too often dogs are allowed to do the same act. Sometimes, this can come at a price of your patience and well-being. So what techniques can be used to calm your dog and assuage their need to constantly bark? Consider all of the following:
  • Using A Calming Tone Of Voice
  • Provide Them With A Toy To Keep Them Busy
  • Use A Piece Of Compression Clothing
  • Fight The Urge To Reward Poor Behavior
  • Keep Them Exercising
  • Take Close Notes Of What Is Causing Them To Bark
  • Give Them A Security Blanket
  • Take Corrective Action When Barking Persists

Using A Calming Tone Of Voice

One of the most common reasons a dog will bark is because they feel they are in danger or that their owner is hurt or in danger. Yelling at them when they begin to bark too much will only reinforce them to keep barking because something is clearly upsetting you. They cannot differentiate you being mad at them for barking from you being in danger and upset about it. Always be sure to use a calm, cool and collected tone of voice when addressing your dog to let them know that everything is okay and there is nothing to be worried about.

Provide Them With A Toy To Keep Them Busy

Barking may also be a sign of boredom in your dog. If they have no other means to entertain themselves, then they may resort to nothing more than hearing the sound of their own voice. This can also be looked at as a cry for attention much like how children tend to get fussy when they’re bored. To help with this, try providing the dog with a toy to keep them busy when they start excessively barking.

Use A Piece Of Compression Clothing

Compression clothing has been found to help anxiety in dogs of all shapes and sizes. This is because the compression of the clothes mimics a comforting embrace. Because, many dogs tend to start barking when they feel uncomfortable or scared, compression can help ease their fears and generally mellow them out. You can even find stylish compression clothing for your dogs so they'll look great too!

Fight The Urge To Reward Poor Behavior

Some dogs bark at their owners because they want something. And while the temptation is certainly there to just give in and give the dog what he or she wants, this will quickly develop a vicious cycle that may be even more difficult to get out of. For example, if a dog barks and you give them a treat so that they’ll stop, the dog will now associate barking with treats and could potentially begin to do the action more causing you more stress and the need to shell out more of your hard earned dollars on dog treats each month.

Keep Them Exercising

All too often, your dog is barking just to blow off steam much how children tend to act up more when they have tons of pent up energy. While you can’t put your dog in after school sports, you can make sure that they get ample exercise throughout the day. If you have a fenced in yard or your dog is trained well enough to stay on your property, make sure to let them outside to run until their heart's content three to four times per day. An added bonus to this is that if you take them for regular walks, you’re getting a ton of exercise as well which can improve both your mood and your health when done regularly.

Take Close Notes Of What Is Causing Them To Bark

Most dogs have some sort of trigger that causes them to bark almost uncontrollably. Very infrequently do dogs bark for absolutely no reason. By taking note of the situations that cause your dog to start barking, you will be more likely to avoid these situations in the future which make for a happier dog, more peaceful owner and a much quieter household. If many people in the house at one time overwhelm the dog, place them in a room by themselves when you have many guests. If certain sounds outside tend to make them bark, you can take measures to dampen these sounds with certain types of insulation.

Give Them A Security Blanket

Dogs bark when they feel uncomfortable or like they’re in danger, especially smaller dogs. To address this, you can purchase them a security blanket of sorts. This way, when they start to get too worked up and begin to bark, you can wrap them in a comforting blanket. Some stores even sell slightly weighted blankets which can serve as an additional comfort to smaller dogs. You already treat them like one of your babies, so why not swaddle them in a security blanket like one?

Take Corrective Action When Barking Persists

While ignoring the dog’s excessive barking has been found to work for some pet owners, some people simply can’t ignore the incessant sound of barking that comes with certain canine friends. Be sure to correct the action by telling the dog no and removing them from the situation that is making them bark so much. For example, if the dog is barking at people walking by the house, close the blinds by these windows so the dog no longer sees what they perceive as a threat.
